If you suffer from chronic anxiety, you have most likely looked into all sorts of anxiety cures. Due to the social stigma that still exists in some segments of our society with regard to mentally health problems in general and anxiety disorders in particular, many people will try to solve the problem themselves. Reaching out for professional help is a last resort for many people.
You might very well think (or probably have been told) that one of the only anxiety cures your doctor will know about is medication. The idea that your doctor will “make” you take medication is a common misconception.
Sometimes just speaking to your health provider about your feelings of anxiety might be useful in and of itself and not even require anxiety cures. Your health provider might notice that a prescription you are taking increases anxiety, or point out changes in your lifestyle that might help decrease anxiety.
When discussing your anxiety with your physician, be sure to bring up your feelings about the various treatment options. Unless otherwise told, your doctor will generally offer you the two most common treatment options, which are medication and/or therapy, so it is important for you to state your opinions about the alternatives for traditional anxiety cures.
Just because the doctor begins anxiety treatment by prescribing medication or referring a therapist doesn’t mean that someone is limited to these choices. People often feel that they have been boxed in and that these are the only anxiety cures available, but that really isn’t true. Any kind of treatment that treats anxiety can be explored.
When discussing anxiety cures with your physician, be honest about your comfort level regarding various courses of action. If trying traditional treatments is not your first option, let him/her know that. Once your doctor understands your preferences, he/she should be sensitive to your feelings and wishes and prescribe an appropriate course of action.
It’s a good idea to discuss with your doctor your choices regarding both medical and non-therapy anxiety cures. It is also likely that your doctor may be open to alternative treatments, including breathing and calming methods, and other alternative remedies for anxiety. You may find that your doctor even gives you the names of people that have more experience in these forms of treatment so that you don’t have to search around for yourself.
