Can Workplace Stress Be Managed?

Workplace stress is one of the most difficult forms of stress to avoid. You must work and once at work you will find many things to stress over. Stress in the workplace is not totally necessary. Like other stressors, there are methods to manage those found in the workplace. If you cannot avoid the stress, you can try to manage it.

Stress in the workplace often comes as a need for everything to be done immediately. For instance, your boss has given you a dozen things to do and they are all important. The problem arises when the workload exceeds the time available. In addition to the workload, someone is always asking for something you completed days ago or your boss is coming to you with more to do. It looks like it will never end but you can manage it.

The first step in avoiding the stress is to focus on one task at a time. Don’t try to multi-task as that will lead to failure impacting your system. Changing focus between projects takes its toll on your brain as it takes time to change your thoughts from one project to the next. Maintaining focus on one project until completion conserves your energy and thoughts instead of spreading them among various tasks.

Coworkers are one of the biggest distractions in the workplace. Others will invariably ask for your opinion or assistance with one of their projects. Find a way to fend off these time wasters so as to avoid loss of focus. If you learn to say “no” you can prevent many distractions. This can be highly effective but it may be a good idea to temper that a little like “No, not right now” or “After I’m done here”. This can give you time to complete the task at hand. By the time you finish, they may have found their own solution, but if not then you won’t be losing focus by helping them.

Sometimes your concentration just runs out causing all types of difficulties. You find yourself reading that paragraph for the tenth time and still don’t know what it meant, or you have been staring at the computer screen for who know how long and still don’t know what it means. Your brain is shutting down and you are becoming ineffective yet the deadline looms. Now is the time to distract yourself by getting up to get a drink, go to the restroom or take a short walk around the building, anything to get your mind off the task for a minute or so. When you return to the project you will be more effective and have lowered the stress level.

Learn some desk exercises to reduce stress. Pick up a spongy ball and squeeze it or do some stretches while at your desk. Working your muscles improves circulation and helps keep you alert and aware. Of course, you aren’t going to do a full body workout while sitting at your desk, but a little exercise can help to keep your mind focused.

Lastly, examine your work environment to make sure it is comfortable for you. Is it too noisy? Is your desk the proper height? Are you comfortable? Is everything ergonomically correct? If you want to work without undue distraction you need to be comfortable to prevent more stress. Therefore, your work space needs to be set up just right for you. If you address the little things in your work space you will be able to work more consistently and confidently.

Stress in the workplace is a part of working. But, with proper management, it is possible to minimize it. When you do that work becomes more pleasant and you end up being more productive. Take care of yourself and the area around you first and the stress will not control you.
